When Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon team up for a Christmas flick, they’re not looking to remake The Santa Clause. As such, this November’s Four Christmases isn’t a cookie-cutter flick about rounding up the entire family on Christmas day and watching the excitement and hilarity that ensues. No, it’s about an ever-worsening trend in American culture: Divorce.

“The movie is all about family,” Witherspoon told us recently of the currently filming flick. “It’s about the connection with your mother and your father, and those dynamics, so I really think people are going to relate to it.”

“It’s going great. It’s very funny, and I’m having a lot of fun doing it,” Vaughn said of the film, which follows a married couple struggling on Christmas day to visit each of their four divorced parents.

But the film will also try to touch on some serious matters. “It’s about divorce,” Witherspoon said, noting the modern-day slant. “It’s about how people have step-families and [need to] negotiate going to your mom’s and your dad’s. I really think people haven’t seen many movies like that.”

But since this is a Vince Vaughn flick, you know he’ll squeeze in some roughhouse comedy along the lines of the notorious Wedding Crashers touch-football scene. “His brothers are obsessed with UFC,” Witherspoon said, referring to the extreme-fighting organization Ultimate Fighting Championship. “There are some great UFC fighting challenges between Vince and his brothers that are pretty outstanding.”

“They’re played by Jon Favreau and Tim McGraw, and it’s some funny stuff,” she said. But wait a minute: Didn’t Favs also play an ultimate fighter on “Friends”?

“Oh, I don’t know; maybe that’s an inside joke,” Witherspoon giggled. “There’s also a nativity scene that’s going to kill people. It’s really funny. I’m the Virgin Mary, and he’s Joseph.”

Despite Christmases following just one holiday season after Fred Claus, Vaughn did make us one promise: He’s not trying to put Tim Allen out of business. “No, I think there’s room for Tim,” Vince laughed. “He does a good job. He’s funny.”
