Archive for August, 2010
Typically in these newsless final weeks of August, bloggers look ahead to Oscar season and bemoan the shortage of plausible Best Actress candidates. Not this year, though! Might 2010 be the greatest-ever year for the category? In the past week, Oscarologists Scott Feinberg and Peter Knegt both surveyed the field and found a glut of strong contenders. Already we’ve seen Oscar-quality performances from Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), and Julianne Moore and Annette Bening (in The Kids Are All Right) — and there are plenty more where those came from.
Other likely candidates include: Lesley Manville (Another Year), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), and Naomi Watts (Fair Game) — all performances that have been seen and raved about at festivals.
But they’ll presumably have heavy competition from Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Hilary Swank (Conviction), Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Robin Wright (The Conspirator), Reese Witherspoon (How Do You Know), and Helen Mirren (The Tempest).
And, hey, if any of the above should disappoint, there’s maybe Diane Lane (Secretariat), Jennifer Connelly (What’s Wrong With Virginia), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hereafter), and Diane Keaton (Morning Glory).
(Compare this to last year, when these were our most likely Best Actress contenders heading into September.)
On the other hand, neither Knegt nor Feinberg were able to identify many surefire candidates for Best Supporting Actress, so if things get too competitive in the lead race, an actress can increase her odds by committing category fraud and slumming it in Supporting (which wasn’t really an option in 2010, since Mo’Nique’s victory was a foregone conclusion). Either way, though, we officially have a death match! This year’s Oscars pretty much have to be more exciting than last year’s, right?
How Do You Know is included in Entertainment Weekly magazine’s August 20th Fall Movie Preview feature, and thanks to Kelly we now have scans of this in the Gallery!
The film is also listed on their ’25 Fall Movies We Can’t Wait To See’ feature on their website, and says the following about the movie:
How Do You Know
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson
Directed by James L. Brooks
This romantic comedy follows two people who meet on a blind date on the worst day of their lives. Reese Witherspoon is a professional softball player who’s been cut by the U.S. national team. Paul Rudd is a businessman just accused of shady financial shenanigans thanks to the bad bookkeeping habits of his father (Jack Nicholson). (12/17)

As posted about a couple of days ago, the first trailer for Reese’s new movie How Do You Know has finally been released, and today I’ve made and added 100+ screencaps from it. While I have to admit, the trailer isn’t too special, I think this looks to be a step in a good direction for Reese, and I’m looking forward to this film itself now. Plus, Reese looks so pretty in the trailer!!
The trailer also gives us the address to the official site for the movie – www.howdoyouknow-movie.com – although there is nothing there yet except international release dates.

Today I have added over 50 super pretty icons made by my friend Melanie. They are mainly from Cruel Intentions … a movie which you can never go wrong with Thanks to Melanie for making us these icons.
Now I have a little plea for you – unfortunately, the site’s previous Fan Archive, which contained over 700 pieces of media created by you guys, was lost somewhere down the line due to a virus. Neither of the previous owners have backups of it so sadly everything has been lost. So I’m looking to you to help re-build it! If you would like to contribute any kind of fanart (icons, wallpapers, banners, blends, graphics etc.) then please do not hesitate to get in touch! I’d love to display your work, and full credit will always be given to you. Thanks!
The first trailer for Reese’s upcoming movie How Do You Know has finally been released! The film is still set for release on December 17th in the US, and the synopsis is as follows:
The film centers on a love triangle between a professional baseball player (Wilson), a white collar executive (Rudd), and the object of their affection (Witherspoon).
Screencaps from the trailer will be added into the Gallery asap.
Reese Witherspoon is working her way through the classic American songbook.
The actress, who won an Oscar in 2005 for portraying June Carter in “Walk the Line,” is pulling together an untitled biopic about Peggy Lee with writer-director Nora Ephron and Fox 2000. Though Witherspoon is still negotiating to star, she is producing along with Marc Platt.
Witherspoon secured rights to the vocalist’s life from the Lee estate and brought the project to Fox 2000. She then approached Platt, who produced the “Legally Blonde” movies, and Ephron, who counts herself a major fan of Lee’s music. Ephron is writing the script and is attached to direct, as well.
Born in North Dakota in 1920, Lee became an iconic singer, songwriter and actor. In the early 1940s, Lee (born to Scandanavian parents as Norma Deloris Egstrom) got her start singing for Benny Goodman’s band.
She went on to record popular jazz-influenced albums and compose for film sountracks as well as appear on screen in the 1953 movie “The Jazz Singer” and the 1955 musical “Pete Kelly’s Blues,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. Her songwriting and voice-over contributions to Disney’s 1955 film “Lady and the Tramp” eventually led to a lawsuit that won her video tape royalties decades later.
Fox 2000 has already done a lot of business with Witherspoon — in addition to “Best Laid Plans” and “Walk the Line” the studio is currently filming “Water for Elephants” with the actress starring for an April release. Studio head Elizabeth Gabler is overseeing the Lee project.
Repped by CAA and Management 360, Witherspoon’s last live-action role was in the 2008 comedy “Four Christmases.” In addition to “Elephants,” she has the James Brooks film “How Do You Know” coming out from Columbia in December and the action comedy “This Means War” in development at Fox proper.
The CAA-repped Ephron last wrote and directed “Julie & Julia.”
As promised, I’ve re-capped Reese’s 2006 movie Penelope, and added those screencaps to the Gallery. Penelope is one of my favourite Reese movies – it’s a quirkly and charming film, and even though Reese is not in it much, her scenes add an extra bit of humour and spark. Enjoy the screencaps

I decided to work on some Penelope screencaps today, and have so far added screencaps from the (Region 1) DVD extras. I’ll be re-capping the movie itself later today, all being well, in better quality than the screencaps that were in the Gallery before.
