Reese Witherspoon is all set for a low-key Mother’s Day this weekend.
She’ll be lunching with her mom, Betty Reese, and kids, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4. But as a paparazzi target, the Oscar winner knows she can’t count on a disruption-free holiday, even though she’s careful not to reveal a single specific detail about their plans — not even the state.
Despite that obvious drawback of fame, she still sees some pluses — and so do her kids. They have “always kind of known me to be who I was, and if people know Mom at the grocery store, I think they kind of like it,” says Witherspoon, 32. “Obviously, if you’re not having the greatest day, it’s not always easy, but for the most part, (fame) brings a lot of positive things into our life.”
When Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon team up for a Christmas flick, they’re not looking to remake The Santa Clause. As such, this November’s Four Christmases isn’t a cookie-cutter flick about rounding up the entire family on Christmas day and watching the excitement and hilarity that ensues. No, it’s about an ever-worsening trend in American culture: Divorce.
“The movie is all about family,” Witherspoon told us recently of the currently filming flick. “It’s about the connection with your mother and your father, and those dynamics, so I really think people are going to relate to it.”
I don’t know how we managed to miss out on these news but Reese joined the cast of another animated movie back in April. It is called The Bear and the Bow and fellow voice cast will include Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson. The film will be released around Christmas time in 2011 (wow, that’s a long time from now!). Here is the synopsis:
A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar’s action-adventure The Bear and the Bow. The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right. Director Brenda Chapman (The Prince of Egypt, The Lion King) and the storytelling wizards of Pixar conjure humor, fantasy and excitement in this rich Highland tale.
Slightly off-topic but there’s a very good interview with Ryan Phillippe over at Times Online that I thought some of you may be interested in. Here are some interesting quotes related to Reese and the children.
He readily admits, however, to having been unprepared for the degree of attention a high-profile romance brings. “I fooled myself into believing it would be easier than it was. To have people speculating constantly about the state of your relationship, casting aspersions and telling lies… It took more of a toll than I was immediately aware of. When you factor in being separated so much because you’re working in different places… Not that I blame our no longer being together on that one thing. I take responsibility and she [Witherspoon] would also for the way we ended up going. But it didn’t help.”
However, the attention has not abated since their parting, due largely to his own rising stock in the film capital. Phillippe regrets this for himself, but nowhere near as much as he does for his daughter. “She’s aware and it creates in her a lot of anxiety, which is partly my fault. When Ava was very young, I was young too. And brash. I’d get… I wouldn’t like to say violent, but visibly angry at the paparazzi back then. She was my first child, and my instinct was to protect her. I remember one time that I’m not at all proud of, I was holding my daughter and handed her to Reese and ran off to chase this one guy down and hit him. I would never do that now.
“I think the attitude I had at the time did create in her a lot of the fearfulness she has today.” His son Deacon is not affected in the same way. “Mainly because since his birth I’ve realised that you’ve got to make it seem like less of a big deal. Ava to this day, though… It breaks my heart to think about it, hearing her say, ‘My friends at school saw a picture of me in a magazine and they made fun ’cos I was carrying a blanket.’ A little girl having to consider how she looks before leaving the house? I have a privileged life and hate to complain but there’s something vile about that.”
This pretty much sums up why we do not post paparazzi photos on this site.
The Idol Gives Back show was filmed last Saturday, April 6, and Reese was, of course, in attendance. She looked very classy in a LBD and I’ve added 15 HQ photos of her appearance. Just a remember, Idol Gives Back will air tonight on FOX so be sure to tune in! If anyone’s able to help out with a video clip, please get in touch, we’d appreciate it so much!
I’ve added some very special high quality photos from the Idol Gives Back show. Nico and Mariana have also contributed some wonderful scans so check those out as well!
Reese Witherspoon visited at a New Orleans school for at-risk kids for the upcoming Idol Gives Back special.
Airing April 9, the show features Witherspoon, 32, at a Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School where troubled children learn to become community leaders.
It isn’t Witherspoon’s first do-gooder trip to the Big Easy.
In 2006, the actress (and CDF board member) helped open the city’s first Freedom School.
“Once you have children in your life, you can no longer close your eyes to people… who are in a similar situation,” Witherspoon told ABC News at the time.
Brad Pitt, Us Power Girl Miley Cyrus, newly single Robin Williams and Mariah Carey will also take part in the Idol Gives Back show.
Last year’s special raised more than $75 million to help fight poverty.
Big thanks to BJ DeHut for pointing us in the direction of some new Walk the Line material, including this wonderful video about Reese’s singing in the movie. View all of the videos here.
Filming has now wrapped for Four Christmases, starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, and the movie is in post-production. It will be released November 26, 2008 in the USA – a little earlier than I was expecting, which is always good news. Aside voicing a character for Monsters vs. Aliens, I am not quite sure on what Reese’s next movie will be but hopefully something will be announced soon for her. Meanwhile, check you some 2008 photos from the set of Four Christmases in the gallery.
Again, apologies for the lack in updates. Things have been very busy in my end and now that Reese is done promoting Penelope in the US, things are getting more quiet again. To make up for it, I come bearing amazing gifts, powered by Mariana! Believe it or not, Penelope is already available on DVD in Brazil so she has created 200 caps of Reese’s little role for us and scanned the covers. The caps should not be spoilery even if you have not seen the film since her role really is so small. In addition, I’ve added one more HQ still from the movie as well as capped a Simply Entertainment Penelope special.
By the way, Penelope will be released on DVD in the UK on June 9, 2008. Pre-order now at Amazon!

"And last week I saw Cameron Diaz at Fred Segal, and I talked her out of buying this truly heinous angora sweater. Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed."
