Reese Witherspoon is sitting on a dais in a ritzy Beverly Hills hotel with Jake Gyllenhaal and some of the other stars from her latest film, Rendition, along with the director, Gavin Hood. They’re answering questions about the film, a dramatic thriller about one of the most controversial aspects of the “war on terror”, the practice of “extraordinary rendition”. That’s the heavily criticised procedure used by the CIA to secrete suspected terrorists to countries such as Egypt and Morocco, where they can be interrogated – and tortured – without being subject to US law.

Witherspoon plays the wife of an American-Egyptian chemical engineer who disappears after boarding a flight from Cape Town. She gradually learns that her husband is suspected of being a terrorist, and has been “rendered” by the CIA to a North African country, evidently Morocco. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the CIA analyst charged with overseeing her husband’s interrogation, who becomes troubled by the morality of what he and the US government are doing.

As they answer questions, I find I’m not really listening. I am transfixed by Witherspoon, whom I am going to be meeting in person in a few minutes. She’s the only woman on the panel of six, and, even at a distance, her very blonde hair and very blue eyes, sitting within exquisitely tiny features, are quite mesmerising among the heavy-set, dark-haired men up there. It’s incredibly hard to grasp that this tiny creature, who looks as fragile as a miniature porcelain doll, is by far the most successful, most powerful and best-paid person in the room.

Reese Witherspoon is the #5 top cover star, according to Forbes‘ first-ever analysis of the top-selling celebrity faces. Only Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie’s pictures on the covers of magazines cause a greater increase in sales than Reese! Here’s the top 10:

1) Jennifer Aniston
2) Brad Pitt
3) Scarlett Johansson
4) Angelina Jolie
5) Reese Witherspoon
6) Katie Holmes
7) Carrie Underwood
8) Jennifer Hudson [tie]
8) Valerie Bertinelli [tie]
10) Kelly Ripa

We looked at the newsstand sales of the six leading celebrity weeklies – People, Star, US Weekly, In Touch Weekly, Life & Style and OK! –over a six-month period ending June 30, as supplied by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. We eliminated all non-celebrity and collage covers as well as special issues with exceptionally large rate bases. Then we counted how many more–or less–issues the celebrity’s cover sold, as compared with the magazine’s average newsstand sales. Next, we factored in the number of full covers a celebrity graced. Finally, we ranked his or her consumer appeal using data from Encino, Calif.-based polling firm E-Poll Market Research to rule out flukes.

Here is what they said about Ms Witherspoon:

Witherspoon is nothing if not loved. In fact, the Oscar-winning actress is the third most-liked star on our list, with an E-score of 35. But when it comes to shilling magazines, her results are mixed. Though her Feb. 19 US Weekly cover saw newsstand sales rise some 5%, sales of her April 23 cover of the same glossy fell 6%.

I interviewed Witherspoon earlier this month at the Toronto filmfest. She talked about how she formerly rated her comedies lower than her dramas, despite kudos she earned for her light touch. But Witherspoon, like the hero in the classic screwball comedy Sullivan’s Travels, evolved.

“I just recently realized the power of laughter and how it changes people’s lives,” said Witherspoon, who is raising two youngsters alone after splitting from Ryan Phillippe.

The delightfully titled Tokyo Suckerpunch, which Tobey Maguire has been developing as producer and star for two years with screenwriter Ed Solomon (Men in Black) and producers Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick (Memoirs of a Geisha), has also recently picked up momentum. Now it looks like the movie — a romantic comedy/action/modern noir hybrid that uses live-action and anime — will reunite Maguire with Pleasantville costar Reese Witherspoon and writer-director Gary Ross, who also directed him in Seabiscuit.

“One of the most attractive things about it is that it combines anime with live action,” says Ross, who mixed black-and- white and color footage as a thematic device in Pleasantville, his 1998 directorial debut. “It presents a lot of stylistic opportunities in how you shoot the live action so that it works harmonically.”

People magazine has complied a list of the Best & Worst Dressed of 2007. Reese Witherspoon falls under “The Sophisticate”:

2007 brought out the best in Reese Witherspoon. From her spectacular Nina Ricci gown at the Oscars to her simple black ensembles on the streets of L.A., this mother of two shows us less is definitely more.

GlamourMagazine.co.uk reports that Reese Witherspoon has been offering her advice to Nina Ricci Artistic Director, Olivier Theyskens.

Theyskens says, “My best friend Reese has helped me design [the latest collection] — she is always giving me materials and advising me.”

The recently divorced mom of two has been wearing Nina Ricci shoes on the red carpet, an insider tells Glamour, continuing, “Olivier and Reese herself love the combination of the brand and her style.”

Ms. Witherspoon looked like a true movie star at the Toronto Film Festival Rendition premiere. She wore a stunning black number and had her hair on soft waves. It may be one of my personal favorite Reese looks of all time!

Unfortunately the word from Toronto is that Rendition does not quite live up to the expectations and early buzz. Below is a quote from Variety regarding Reese’s performance, which was quite crushing for me to read… Read full review here:

Even Witherspoon, normally the most spirited of performers who can inject even limited characters and blah scripts with her own spark, can do little but mope around and search for different ways to look worried. A limited acting exercise, to say the least.

Two of young Hollywood’s biggest superstars descended upon the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday to promote what’s already one of the most buzzed-about movies of the 10-day movie marathon.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, rumoured to have become romantically involved when they shot the taut, post-9-11 thriller Rendition last year, sat with two people between them at a packed downtown news conference and weren’t asked any questions about their alleged relationship.

The flaxen-haired Witherspoon, dressed in a black and navy cap-sleeved dress with black patent stilettos, said she was happy to take on the role because of how it personalized the after-shocks of terrorism.

Witherspoon plays the pregnant wife of an Egyptian-American travelling abroad who is detained – and soon savagely tortured – following a deadly suicide bombing that kills a CIA operative. She embarks upon a mission to find her husband as Gyllenhaal, playing a CIA man with a conscience in Egypt, tries to determine the terrified man’s guilt or innocence.

“We become more anesthetized as we see more news and coverage of things that I just don’t connect to anymore … it feels like the suicide bombings are so prolific and sometimes you don’t find the stories of reverberation, and how the families are affected,” said the 31-year-old actress.
