Also, although this is not related to Reese, I wanted to take a moment to promote my new site for actress Kristen Stewart. She is known from her work in Into the Wild, In the Land of Women and Twilight, among others. Hop on over to www.kristenstewartweb.com to learn more about her!
CNN published a special report written by Miss Reese. They also posted an old video interview of her at the Avon walk earlier this year (view it under the cut). They announced Avon‘s next walk will take place in New York City on October 4 and 5.
By Reese Witherspoon
Every three minutes in the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.
As a woman, a mother, and a daughter, I find that statistic terrifying. I was never naïve about breast cancer, but hearing this statistic put it all into perspective.
Women close to me have battled the disease and are now soldiers in the greater fight against it. But the moment I heard “every three minutes,” I felt vulnerable and scared as I realized that anyone is susceptible.
As earlier reported Reese was in Brazil yesterday as the Avon Global Ambassador. The event was “Speak Out Against Domestic Violence,” a joint campaign launched in 2004 by the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Avon cosmetics company. She looked ultra pretty in a classy navy dress, hoop earrings and blue heels. The event was held at the World Trade Center hotel in Sao Paulo and lasted one hour, Reese highlighted the campaign’s aims in Latin America, including the sale of bracelets which is financing the charity. She flew back to the United States yesterday shortly after arriving on Wednesday. I’d like to thank Marcela for many picture contributions and translations!
Here is a news report regarding the press conference.
“One woman in three in the world is affected by domestic violence. There isn’t a woman in the world that doesn’t have a friend or a partner who’s actually experiencing some sort of violence against them, so I think although domestic violence hasn’t happened to me personally, I certainly know women who are dealing with this struggle every day.” – Reese Witherspoon
In a symbolic gesture, she gave one of the bracelets to Maria da Penha Maia Fernandes, a Brazilian woman who has come to represent domestic violence in her home country after she was left a paraplegic by her violent husband.
After a 20-year legal battle, Brazil in 2006 named a law after Maia Fernandes that recognizes domestic violence against women as a human rights violation, and extends a number of preventive and punitive measures as well as assistance.
According to UNIFEM, one Brazilian woman in five suffers violence at the hands of a man, and there were an estimated 2.1 million women in the country who each year are victims of domestic violence.
Domestic violence, Witherspoon said, “affects women who are famous, who are not famous, women who have money, women who have no money. This is an issue that crosses all boundaries and it certainly affects everyone.”

Avon Global Ambassador, Reese Witherspoon, will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil to celebrate the success of the company’s first-ever global fundraising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet, which has sold 1.5 million since launching in March.
Reese will be joined by female luminaries, Nilceia Freire, Brazil’s Federal Secretary for Women Policies, Ana Falu, UNIFEM Regional Director for the Southern Cone, and bio-chemist and domestic violence survivor, Maria da Penha.
The Avon Women’s Empowerment Bracelet was created to raise awareness about the need to speak out against the violence that affects women globally. In support of this mission, proceeds from the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet will go to the Avon Empowerment Fund, which will contribute to the UNIFEM-managed UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The first $500,000 from bracelet sales have been matched in 2008 by the Avon Foundation for a total donation of $1 million for new grants by the UN Trust Fund, representing the single-largest one-year corporate contribution to-date. Additional funds raised will support local domestic violence programs in each country Avon is located.

Miss Witherspoon is currently in Japan as an Avon Ambassador, bringing a message of empowerment and hope to the Asia Pacific Region. She has attended a couple of events and, as you can see from the preview on the right, she’s looking absolutely lovely.
Unfortunately I am unable to update the gallery with pictures at the moment because I just moved (to another country as well) and I do not have stable net connection. Mycah is also very busy because she started a new job earlier this week. We will get to it as soon as possible so please bear with us as usual.
We hope to get some planned renovations done starting next month and catch up on the inbox. Things have been so hectic in both of our lives recently so we’re a little behind and we apologize for this.
Today, Avon Global Ambassador, Reese Witherspoon visited Japan to bring a message of empowerment and hope to the Asia Pacific region. Ms. Witherspoon was the guest of honor at a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony where she met female breast cancer survivors. In addition to the tea ceremony, Ms. Witherspoon met with Avon Representatives and introduced the region to Avon’s first-ever global fundraising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet.
