As earlier reported Reese was in Brazil yesterday as the Avon Global Ambassador. The event was “Speak Out Against Domestic Violence,” a joint campaign launched in 2004 by the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Avon cosmetics company. She looked ultra pretty in a classy navy dress, hoop earrings and blue heels. The event was held at the World Trade Center hotel in Sao Paulo and lasted one hour, Reese highlighted the campaign’s aims in Latin America, including the sale of bracelets which is financing the charity. She flew back to the United States yesterday shortly after arriving on Wednesday. I’d like to thank Marcela for many picture contributions and translations!
Here is a news report regarding the press conference.
“One woman in three in the world is affected by domestic violence. There isn’t a woman in the world that doesn’t have a friend or a partner who’s actually experiencing some sort of violence against them, so I think although domestic violence hasn’t happened to me personally, I certainly know women who are dealing with this struggle every day.” – Reese Witherspoon
In a symbolic gesture, she gave one of the bracelets to Maria da Penha Maia Fernandes, a Brazilian woman who has come to represent domestic violence in her home country after she was left a paraplegic by her violent husband.
After a 20-year legal battle, Brazil in 2006 named a law after Maia Fernandes that recognizes domestic violence against women as a human rights violation, and extends a number of preventive and punitive measures as well as assistance.
According to UNIFEM, one Brazilian woman in five suffers violence at the hands of a man, and there were an estimated 2.1 million women in the country who each year are victims of domestic violence.
Domestic violence, Witherspoon said, “affects women who are famous, who are not famous, women who have money, women who have no money. This is an issue that crosses all boundaries and it certainly affects everyone.”

Avon Global Ambassador, Reese Witherspoon, will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil to celebrate the success of the company’s first-ever global fundraising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet, which has sold 1.5 million since launching in March.
Reese will be joined by female luminaries, Nilceia Freire, Brazil’s Federal Secretary for Women Policies, Ana Falu, UNIFEM Regional Director for the Southern Cone, and bio-chemist and domestic violence survivor, Maria da Penha.
The Avon Women’s Empowerment Bracelet was created to raise awareness about the need to speak out against the violence that affects women globally. In support of this mission, proceeds from the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet will go to the Avon Empowerment Fund, which will contribute to the UNIFEM-managed UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The first $500,000 from bracelet sales have been matched in 2008 by the Avon Foundation for a total donation of $1 million for new grants by the UN Trust Fund, representing the single-largest one-year corporate contribution to-date. Additional funds raised will support local domestic violence programs in each country Avon is located.

Miss Witherspoon is currently in Japan as an Avon Ambassador, bringing a message of empowerment and hope to the Asia Pacific Region. She has attended a couple of events and, as you can see from the preview on the right, she’s looking absolutely lovely.
Unfortunately I am unable to update the gallery with pictures at the moment because I just moved (to another country as well) and I do not have stable net connection. Mycah is also very busy because she started a new job earlier this week. We will get to it as soon as possible so please bear with us as usual. We hope to get some planned renovations done starting next month and catch up on the inbox. Things have been so hectic in both of our lives recently so we’re a little behind and we apologize for this.
Today, Avon Global Ambassador, Reese Witherspoon visited Japan to bring a message of empowerment and hope to the Asia Pacific region. Ms. Witherspoon was the guest of honor at a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony where she met female breast cancer survivors. In addition to the tea ceremony, Ms. Witherspoon met with Avon Representatives and introduced the region to Avon’s first-ever global fundraising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet.

Reese Witherspoon is all set for a low-key Mother’s Day this weekend.
She’ll be lunching with her mom, Betty Reese, and kids, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4. But as a paparazzi target, the Oscar winner knows she can’t count on a disruption-free holiday, even though she’s careful not to reveal a single specific detail about their plans — not even the state.
Despite that obvious drawback of fame, she still sees some pluses — and so do her kids. They have “always kind of known me to be who I was, and if people know Mom at the grocery store, I think they kind of like it,” says Witherspoon, 32. “Obviously, if you’re not having the greatest day, it’s not always easy, but for the most part, (fame) brings a lot of positive things into our life.”

As we reported earlier, Reese Witherspoon was a special guest at the sixth annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Washington, D.C. this weekend, cheering on and joining walkers on their second day and participating in the celebratory and inspirational Closing Ceremony. At the Ceremony, Reese joined the family, friends and supporters of 3,500 participants in celebrating $8.1 million raised for local, regional and national breast cancer organizations. The women and men in the weekend-long Avon Walk Washington, D.C. hailed from 40 states and included nearly 300 breast cancer survivors. Way to go Reese! I truly never get tired of reporting on these kinds of news, it’s so great to see someone in the industry giving back like this. And she looked uber cute! Check out the pics in the gallery we’ve started adding.
Reese said: “I am very excited to be partnering with the Avon Foundation and to help them continue to affect real change, I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society. As the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, one of my first experiences last year was to meet Avon Walk walkers at a training walk in Los Angeles. Now I am proud to support the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer here in Washington, D.C. and hope my presence can in some measure express my deep appreciation for all the women and men who participate in the Avon Walks, and for all of the people who dedicate their lives to breast cancer research and care.”
They said: “During the past year, Reese has been a champion for the Avon Foundation’s commitment to women, and now she has lent her support to our Avon Walk participants in DC. We are excited that Reese has been able to meet in person the dedicated women and men who are raising funds, and the researchers and organizations that are using those funds to save lives.”

Reese Witherspoon visited at a New Orleans school for at-risk kids for the upcoming Idol Gives Back special.
Airing April 9, the show features Witherspoon, 32, at a Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School where troubled children learn to become community leaders.
It isn’t Witherspoon’s first do-gooder trip to the Big Easy.
In 2006, the actress (and CDF board member) helped open the city’s first Freedom School.
“Once you have children in your life, you can no longer close your eyes to people… who are in a similar situation,” Witherspoon told ABC News at the time.
Brad Pitt, Us Power Girl Miley Cyrus, newly single Robin Williams and Mariah Carey will also take part in the Idol Gives Back show.
Last year’s special raised more than $75 million to help fight poverty.
