Avon and UNIFEM Announce Partnership to End Violence against Women and Launch of the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet
WHAT: The Global Summit for a Better Tomorrow — the keystone in a series of Avon initiatives to raise awareness of International Women’s Day — takes place at the United Nations on Tuesday, March 4th. The Summit is held together with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), in celebration of International Women’s Day, which will be recognized globally on March 8, 2008. It is a holiday whose history can be traced back 150 years and is celebrated in countries all over the world.
At a UN press conference prior to the Summit, Avon and UNIFEM will announce a new public-private partnership that represents the largest corporate one-year grant made to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.
MORE: Avon Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon is unveiling the company’s first global fundraising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet. The bracelet will sell for US$3 each and all net profits will be donated to the Avon Empowerment Fund. In 2008, the Avon Foundation will match the first US$500,000 in bracelet sales for a total donation of US$1 million to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. These resources will bolster critical work to prevent and reduce the prevalence of violence against women. Reese Witherspoon, among many other celebrities (including Walk the Line co-star Joaquin Phoenix), is involved in a broadcast public service announcement (PSA), calling attention to the need for affordable, quality health care for all Americans.
Hollywood’s leading nonprofit organizations, the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), have joined the “Divided We Fail” national movement led by AARP to bring attention to the domestic issues that worry Americans most: health care and financial security. Launching today, this unprecedented three-year collaboration between the entertainment world and the nation’s largest advocacy group seeks bipartisan cooperation in finding solutions.
“We are thrilled to have EIF and MPTF join us,” said Bill Novelli, CEO of AARP. “This nation’s health care and financial security crisis is about to explode: 47 million Americans have no health insurance, and more middle-class people are filing for bankruptcy because of health care-related expenses than for any other reason. We need to build a national conversation around these issues, and the entertainment industry is uniquely suited to help us do that,” he said. “We must get everyone — individuals, companies, and policymakers — involved, regardless of their political persuasion. Only then will we be able to address these very serious challenges successfully.”

Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon heeded Avon’s call on Wednesday to become the giant direct-sale cosmetics company’s first ever “Global Ambassador.”
Her duties include acting as a spokeswoman for Avon’s cosmetics and its army of sales representatives whose slogan is “Avon Calling”. She will also be the honorary chairwoman of the Avon Foundation that focuses on such issues as breast cancer and domestic abuse.
“As a woman and a mother I care deeply about the well being of other women and children throughout the world and through the years, I have always looked for opportunities to make a difference,” said Witherspoon.
In a brief interview with Reuters after her news conference, she said she got involved because Avon has a real interest in helping women across the world. “I tried to do the best with balancing work and family. My children are the biggest priority in my life,” said the actress.
Witherspoon, who won the 2005 Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, signed a multi-year agreement, but her compensation was not disclosed.
In addition to her other duties, Witherspoon will also be involved in product development initiatives, and appear globally in Avon advertising, web sites and in the company’s brochures.
Ms. Witherspoon has been named the first ever Avon Global Ambassador at a ceremony in Los Angeles. The actress will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, focusing on breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief initiatives. The role also means she will be the spokeswoman for Avon’s beauty brands. Reese was sworn in at a press conference at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wednesday.
