It’s the biggest, most important question of the season, people: Whom will Reese Witherspoon choose, between pillow-lipped Brit Tom Hardy and confident playboy Chris Pine, in the spy vs. spy love triangle rom-com This Means War? While you won’t get any spoilers here for the Valentine’s Day release, let Hardy and director McG tease you with the envelope-pushing alternate ending ideas that didn’t quite make it to the final cut. (And no — McG didn’t learn from Terminator: Salvation, which he admitted he “pussed out on.” Hindsight, my friends.)

[To the hardcore spoiler-averse who don't even want to know what doesn't happen in the film, a mild warning for what follows...]

The McG-helmed romantic action-comedy This Means War, written by X-Men: The Last Stand scribe Simon Kinberg, finds Reese Witherspoon dating Hardy and Pine at the same time, unaware that they are CIA spies and best friends. As both men find themselves falling for her she must decide which beau she truly wants to be with.

At a press conference today in Los Angeles, McG revealed one idea that was tossed around early on for ending the film in an unconventional way – by releasing two endings into theaters simultaneously, one in which Witherspoon ends up with Hardy and another where she chooses Pine, with no indication to moviegoers of what they were in for.

“We wanted to have flexibility and even talked about two endings and releasing it on 3,000 screens — 1,500 have this [ending] and 1,500 have that one, and just not saying anything,” McG said. “But it felt a little gimmicky in the end.”

Late last year it was reported that Reese would star in and co-produce a new movie entitled Rule #1, and today ScreenDaily.com report that the movie is being prepped to be sold at the European Film Market:

Foresight Unlimited has added two new Emmett/Furla productions to its slate: Courtney Hunt’s romantic comedy Rule #1 starring Reese Witherspoon and Baltasar Kormakur’s action comedy 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.

Brian O’Shea of The Exchange will be helping to sell the projects here at EFM.

For Rule #1 Randall Emmett and George Furla are producing with Brad Epstein of Panther and Reese Witherspoon through her Type A Films. Witherspoon will star as a woman with OCD who takes in a young woman and her newborn baby.

2 Guns, a $90m project being financed with Universal (which will release in the US) starts shooting on June 1 in New Mexico and Louisiana. Producers are Emmett, Furla and Marc Platt.

Envision Entertainment’s Stepan Martirosyan and Remington Chase are executive producing both. Envision has a fund set up with Emmett/Furla.

2 Guns is based on Blake Masters screenplay, adapted from the Steven Grant graphic novel, about a DEA agent and an undercover intelligence officer who are investigating each other and are both being watched by the mob.

Foresight Unlimited’s Mark Damon and Tamara Stuparich De La Barra will be offering both films to international buyers during the European Film Market.

The stars of “This Means War” — Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine — sat down with “Extra” correspondent Terri Seymour and talked about their new comedy/romance.

Witherspoon, whose character is dating two top CIA operatives, played by Pine and Hardy, explained, “Well these guys are very different. They’re both very sophisticated… very attractive.”

“This Means War” opens in theaters on Valentine’s Day.

If you’ve noticed a recurring theme in actress Reese Witherspoon’s recent film roles, you’re not alone. During last night’s (Jan 31st) MTV First: This Means War, featuring a 30-minute interview with the starlet, host Josh Horowitz addressed the important issue—namely that Reese’s last three movies (“How Do You Know,” “Water for Elephants” and “This Means War”) feature the 35-year-old toying with two men’s emotions.

What did the actress have to say for herself? “This is my love triangle period,” she joked. Okay, okay, we can dig it, but have you ever engaged in tumultuous trio in real life?

“No, but I sure wish I had!” she enthused. “Particularly in this one. This is a really good one. I don’t think that happens a lot in real life. That’s why it’s a movie.”

Reese, however, may have been too quick with her denial, because upon further pressing from Josh, she did admit to dating more than one man at once.

“I was dating a while ago. I was dating two people who knew each other. That was kind of weird,” she revealed. “But I didn’t know they knew each other. As soon as I figured it out, I was like, ‘Ugh, I can’t do that.’”

Of course, Reese doesn’t have to worry about the fraught dating world anymore, as she married agent Jim Toth last March. And for the most part, she doesn’t miss singledom.

“I think it’s hard,” she said of dating. “But it’s also exciting too. It’s fun meeting new people. You have that feeling like, ‘I don’t know if they’re going to call. I don’t know if I’m supposed to call them. Am I supposed to call them?’”

If we knew the answer to that one, Reese, our blood pressure would be at least 10 points lower.

Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy form an explosive love triangle in This Means War, the new action-comedy from director McG (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Terminator Salvation), and the three stars tell The Insider’s Brooke Anderson what it was like to lock lips and shed their clothes for the sake of the movie!

In theaters Valentine’s Day, This Means War finds dangerous CIA operatives Chris and Tom, inseparable partners and best friends, falling independently for Reese. But when they discover that they’re vying for the affections of same girl, all bets are off – and may the best man win!

Fox is waving the white flag on what is supposed to be a worth-the-price-of-admission movie which in and of itself is a rarity these days. The studio was supposed to open its ‘romantic action comedy’ This Means War on Tuesday aka Valentine’s Day. But the studio hasn’t seen the pic’s poor tracking pick up at all in recent days, while Sony Pictures/Screen Gems’ The Vow is soaring in wannasee. So Fox has decided to get out of the way. In an unusual move this late in the game, the studio will sneak This Means War on Tuesday and then hope word of mouth spreads before its new release date of Friday, February 17th. I don’t get what the moviegoing public’s problem with this pic is: Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon are just as cool casting as Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams (though apparently not as box office) and the trailers have been engaging (though thrust into a lot of clutter) and the film didn’t look dumb (and that’s is half the battle with this genre).
