Sony’s latest offering from helmer James L. Brooks, “How Do You Know,” will get a PG-13 rating, after all.

After losing its appeal to overturn the original R rating, Sony altered one usage of the word “fuck” to earn the more kid-friendly rating for the Columbia Pictures film.

The revised rating is good news for the romantic comedy, as R ratings limit ducats sold to moviegoers under 17 and act as a potential B.O. buzz kill.

If the restrictive rating had stuck, “How Do You Know,” toplining Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson, would have been Brooks’ second R-rated pic after “Broadcast News.”

Pic lost its ratings battle with the Classification and Rating Appeals Board last week, leaving Sony little choice but to lose some of the language.

Sony will target a broad holiday aud when it launches the film wide on Dec. 17.

After losing its appeal to overturn an R-rating, Columbia Pictures will recut James L. Brooks’ “How Do You Know” to eliminate certain language.

Studio wants the romantic comedy film to be released with the less restrictive PG-13 rating. Pic unspools in theaters Dec. 17.

The R-rating was assigned specifically because the word “fuck” is used three times in the film, which stars Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. Normally, only one occurrence of the word is acceptable in a PG-13 rated film.

On Thursday, the Classification and Rating Appeals Board upheld the R-rating.

When a rating is upheld, filmmakers have the option of making the changes needed to secure a less restrictive rating and resubmitting the film to CARA.

James L. Brooks’ romantic comedy “How Do You Know” has been given an R rating by the MPAA for “some language.”

Individuals familiar with the project have confirmed that producers are planning to appeal the rating, which could threaten the film’s box office potential.

Producer Laurence Mark did not immediately reply to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Brooks’ last R-rated movie was “Broadcast News” in 1987. His last two films, “Spanglish” and “As Good As It Gets,” were rated PG-13.

Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson star in the romantic comedy, which Columbia is set to release on Dec. 17 opposite “Tron: Legacy” and “Yogi Bear.”
