Vanessa Lutz (Reese Witherspoon) is a wild, tell-it-like-it-is 15-year old girl on the road running from foster home authorities to look for her grandmother she has never met, after her mother and step-father are arrested and taken away. Once on the freeway, her gets away car breaks down but another motorist, Bob Wolverton (Kiefer Sutherland), passing by stops and offers to drive her as far as he’s going along her route. Happy and grateful, Vanessa jumps in and learns that her driver is a child psychologist. Soon after she is spilling her life secrets of sexual abuse to Bob, but starts picking up bad vibes from him as he’s listening to her stories. Realising that Bob is enjoying listening to her, she remembers the news story about a rapist on the freeway and puts two and two together. From here Bob is shot numerous times, Vanessa is jailed and two not-so-smart detectives are assigned, trying to solve her case and see if Vanessa is telling the truth.
